The Washington State Department of Natural Resources is planning a public presentation and hearing February 28 in Quilcene to discuss a proposed Inter-Trust Exchange that would allow for the future transfer of up to 826 acres of forestland into the DNR-managed Dabob Bay Natural Resources Conservation Area.
DNR proposes to exchange approximately 820 acres of State Forest Land Trust forestland near Quilcene in Jefferson County for equal-valued parcels of Common School Trust forestland in the same area. All parcels involved in this proposed transaction would remain in state ownership.
Trust Land Transfer program funding from the Legislature would compensate the Common School Trust for the value of the property to be transferred into the Dabob Bay NRCA.In the long term, all or part of the parcels transferred to the Common School Trust are planned for transfer into the Dabob Bay NRCA to be managed for recreation, wildlife habitat, or open space uses consistent with the management plan for the natural area. A portion of the Dabob Bay property is currently managed as State Forest land, which helps support Jefferson County and its local taxing districts. Under state law, only Common School Trust properties may be transferred through the TLT program, but state law permits DNR to propose inter-trust exchanges to meet the needs of the trust beneficiaries.
The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. February 28 at the Quilcene School District Multi-Purpose Room, 294715 U.S. Hwy. 101, Quilcene.

Canadian folk-roots duo Two Crows for Comfort originally had no intentions of playing anything more than an open mic here and there, and went by a different name anytime they hit the stage. Fast forward a few years and Two Crows (Erin Corbin and Cory Sulyma) have unintentionally created something that seems to work. In December 2018 the duo released their debut full-length album, ‘17 Feet’, with back-to-back sold out shows at the Handsome Daughter in Winnipeg.

On March 16 from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m., we’ll gather online for this year’s program, "First, Fall in Love: What It Means to Love a Place," presented by noted environmental advocate, moral philosopher, and award-winning author Dr. Kathleen Dean Moore.
With video, music, and excerpts from her two latest books, "Earth’s Wild Music" and "Take Heart: Encouragement for Earth’s Weary Lovers," Dr. Moore will share her insights into how we can respond directly to the moral urgency of climate change by transforming our love of natural places into environmental action.
We will also discuss the complexities of what it means to love a place — whether it’s a hushed forest, a high meadow, or a rocky shore. When so many of our beloved places are threatened by development or decimation, she argues our love must go beyond celebration. To love a place, Dr. Moore suggests, is to pledge yourself to seeing it thrive — to faithfully defend it for all time.

We’re excited to welcome Ranger and the Re-Arrangers back to Concerts in the Woods. For good reason, their 2022 show was one of the best-attended and warmly received of last year’s concert series.
Ranger and the “Re-Arrangers” evoke the spirit of a Paris cafe and the raucous energy of a Romani campsite with their version of Hot Club Swing. “At the heart of their sound is Ranger’s sweet violin playing… his sense of melody and daring improvisations” (World Rhythm). The band’s repertoire includes swing standards, traditional European melodies, and the music of Django Reinhardt.

And upon meeting Barb Dawson, who plays keyboards in their band and in their home. He thought he would have some extra time available when he retired. Boy, was he wrong about that!
