1:00 pm: WSU Plant Clinic at Jefferson County Library: Ask a Master Gardener

WSU Plant Clinic at Jefferson County Library: Ask a Master Gardener
1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Meet with Master Gardeners for assistance with your gardening questions! Volunteers will provide advice grounded in research-based science and work in partnership with you on horticulture topics. Find the right plant for your environment, learn about composting or insect infestations, investigate the unknown pathogen destroying your beloved plants, and everything in between! Plant Clinics are held in the Humphrey Room on the second Saturday of each month.

If you’d like to bring in a plant sample, please follow the instructions below:

  • Plant problem: the sample should clearly show both unhealthy and healthy tissue. To keep your sample fresh, put the cut end of the stem in a moist paper towel. Be careful to keep your cut plants in a cool and dark location to prevent wilting.
  • Plant identification: include photos or samples of the vegetative part of the plant (leaves, branches, stems), a portion of the fruiting or flowering structure, and a representative portion of the stem or bark. The more structures, the better chance for correct identification.
  • Insect identification: bring an intact specimen in a small container soon after capture. Store in a cool dark place.

11:00 am: Bald Eagle Kayak Tour with Hood Canal Adventures

Bald Eagle Kayak Tour with Hood Canal Adventures
11:00 am - 1:30 pm

April through June, Hood Canal Adventures offers a 2.5 hour American Bald Eagle Viewing Kayak Tour! Our Spring low tides uncover the bounty of the sea, and the plain midshipman sculpin spawning season serves up easy pickings for Bald Eagles. Bald Eagles from around the Puget Sound flock to the shores of the Hood Canal during this time. It is not uncommon to see 40 to 60 Bald Eagles on the beach and perched in overhanging trees, and some days we’ve seen over 100! Watch and learn about Bald Eagles with our Biologist and Naturalists and be sure to bring your camera for some rare up-close photos of eagles in their natural environment! If you prefer a date that is not listed just give us a call to arrange. We can conduct this tour almost any day within the season parameters.

6:00 pm: Diamonds in the Rough: Gentrification of Rural Washington

Diamonds in the Rough: Gentrification of Rural Washington
6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Washington’s rural communities are rapidly changing. Formerly reliant on working-class industries like mining, oil, and agriculture, an influx of wealthy urbanites is looking for a different kind of experience that includes natural amenities, outdoor recreation, and cultural activities. But in doing so, research shows that these newcomers are causing new inequalities.

Join Jennifer Sherman, professor of sociology, to discuss both the glaring and the hidden effects of rural gentrification.
