3:00 pm: Concerts in the Woods presents The Black Feathers

Concerts in the Woods presents The Black Feathers
3:00 pm -

The Black Feathers from Gloucestershire, England, make their welcome return to Concerts in the Woods on the heels of the release of “Where We Are”, their new album just out on Sept. 15th.

The duo, made up of Ray Hughes and Sian Chandler, first became aware of the magic between them while collaborating on several musical projects, becoming The Black Feathers and life partners in 2012.

Americana, Folk, and Acoustic Indie Rock sensibilities coexist comfortably in their musical world, with Hughes’ guitar work buoying the kind of harmonies often only heard in family bands. Their music quickly draws the interest of listeners, but it is the stage chemistry that will keep them riveted.

Having already built up a loyal following in the UK, The Black Feathers have been spreading their wings across the US. They have performed at the Philadelphia Folk Festival, AmericanaFest, Juan de Fuca Festival, The Kate Wolf Festival, and Mile of Music.

This will be the second time The Black Feathers play Concerts in the Woods. Don’t miss them this time!

3:00 pm: Concerts in the Woods presents Luke Bulla

Concerts in the Woods presents Luke Bulla
3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

A long-time member of Lyle Lovett’s Large Band, Luke Bulla has been singing and playing music most of his life. Touring with and singing in his family band from age four, Luke took up the fiddle at seven.

Over the course of the next few years, he won the National Fiddle Contest (in Weiser, Idaho) six times in his respective age categories. His seventh win came in the Grand Champion division at age sixteen, making him the youngest to have earned the title at the time. Entering Nashville’s Grand Master Fiddle Championship at age ten, Luke distinguished himself by being the youngest person to have made the top ten.

In the spring of 1999, Luke moved to Nashville to establish himself as a full time musician. He spent his early years in Tennessee playing fiddle in Ricky Skaggs’ band, Kentucky Thunder, which earned him his first Grammy Award.

More recently Luke has performed and/or recorded with Brandi Carlile, Jim Lauderdale, Darrell Scott, Alison Krauss, Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, Edgar Meyer, Bela Fleck, Bryan Sutton, Kevin Costner & Modern West, Russ Barenberg Trio, Shawn Colvin, Tony Rice, Chris Thile, Peter Rowan, Patty Griffin, Glen Phillips, Rodney Crowell, and Earl Scruggs, to name a few.

In 2009, Luke released a solo EP featuring Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, Bela Fleck, Aoife O’Donovan and more. That same year, Lyle Lovett asked Luke to join his Large Band, and he now tours full time in all of Lyle’s configurations.

In addition to violin, Luke plays guitar and mandolin, and sings and writes his own original songs.

3:00 pm: Concerts in the Woods presents Mary Fahl

Concerts in the Woods presents Mary Fahl
3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Mary Fahl. The only word we can say is wow because if you know, you KNOW. Concerts in the Woods could not find a more fabulous artist to bring our amazing 2023 series to a beautiful close.

With “a voice for the gods that can transport listeners to other realms” (Boston Globe), Mary Fahl is an expressive, emotional singer/songwriter who first achieved fame as lead singer and co-founder of the mid-1990s NYC- based chamber-pop group October Project, a band known for their lush harmonies, sweeping melodies and Fahl’s unique and powerful vocals. After two records on Epic, the band disbanded, but Fahl had more freedom to pursue her own muse, whether that meant writing and recording songs for movies (including the theme for the Civil War epic “Gods and Generals”), singing arias and medieval Spanish songs for Sony Classical or releasing a unique album-length take on “Dark Side of the Moon”.

Mary’s latest CD, “Can’t Get It Out of My Head”, is a truly great album of other artists’ music, songs that got Mary’s attention early in her life, helping her find her own musical path in the process.

Says Fahl of the new record: “On top of all the madness that was happening in the world, I was grappling with the loss of my mother and sister this past year and was feeling completely rootless. In an effort to find an anchor, a link to the past, a sense of home, I began to immerse myself in the comfort of music from my youth. These were such essential songs for me… like old friends… my musical home in many ways. I fell in love with each of them at the quintessential coming-of-age moment when music goes straight into your heart with no filter and these songs became part of my musical DNA… I learned to play guitar with several of them – especially the early Neil Young songs. Most of these covers come from the first albums I ever bought using one of those Columbia House ‘get 12 free albums for a $1’ mail order programs. I played these records endlessly… and the lyrics on many of these songs still have a powerful resonance for me.”

We couldn’t be more thrilled/honored/stoked to welcome Mary Fahl to Concerts in the Woods and the Olympic Peninsula just as the holiday season begins. Kind of feels like an early gift!

Please arrive as doors open at 2:30. This show will likely fill up very quickly.
