Half Day Kayak Tour & Picnic with Hood Canal Adventures
11:00 am - 3:00 pm

On this guided half day adventure we paddle along the scenic rocky shoreline of the North Hood Canal in search of the area’s abundant wildlife before stopping at a secluded beach for a picnic lunch, swimming, and beach combing. Seals, eagles, marine invertebrates, small fish and river otters may be spotted along the way and occasionally we encounter larger marine mammals such as Orca, humpback whales and California Sea Lions.

Bring your own lunch, or order a ciabatta sandwich or wrap picnic from us prepared by The Crow’s Nest Bistro ($17.50 each). Please wear shoes that are sturdy and can get wet. There are many oysters on the beach where we stop and they can be quite sharp. Feel free to shuck oysters on the beach or let us teach you how! We always carry oyster knives and gloves!

The waters in the Hood Canal can reach 73 degrees F in the summer, so wear your swimsuit for June through September tours! Or any time of year if your a polar plunger!

All kayaking and safety equipment and your Yelvik’s Beach day use / parking fee is included.

Bioluminescence / Night Kayaking Tour with Hood Canal Adventures
9:30 pm - 11:30 pm

View bioluminescence from your kayak on this magical 2 hour guided night tour! As you paddle through the waters, bioluminescent plankton will light up like fireflies. The more you splash and agitate the water with your hands and paddles the more you will make the water sparkle! And don’t forget to look up to stars! We may also see the beautiful moon, meteors, bats and maybe hear a squawking heron or a startled harbor seal.

We have a 100% success rate for seeing bioluminescence on our tours in the last 4 years, however the amount and brilliance varies.  We do not have control over natural conditions.  We place you in the right place at the right time while giving you the tools and guidance on how best to “activate” it. We also have no control over differences in individuals night vision or other eyesight issues. We hope you appreciate the entire experience of being on the water at night, whether it be paddling with a full moon, meteor showers, nocturnal wildlife and simple peacefulness of this eerie and wonderful evening.

Kayaks and all safety equipment included.

Economic Development Discussion at Cove RV
11:00 am -

Come and join Dan Ventura, owner of Cove RV & North Hood Canal Chamber of Commerce President, and Una Wirkebau at the pavilion at Cove RV this Friday for an informal chat.
A huge grant has been applied for under the federal RECOMPETE program, and we'd all like to hear some ideas on how to help South County. This will be focused on removing the barriers to living-wage employment. this could mean educational opportunities, transportation assistance, childcare, and anything else that limits resident access to careers and employment.

WSU Plant Clinic: Ask a Master Gardener!
1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Meet with Master Gardeners for assistance with your gardening questions! Volunteers will provide advice grounded in research-based science and work in partnership with you on horticulture topics. Find the right plant for your environment, learn about composting or insect infestations, investigate the unknown pathogen destroying your beloved plants, and everything in between! Plant Clinics are held in the Humphrey Room on the second Saturday of each month.

If you’d like to bring in a plant sample, please follow the instructions below:

  • Plant problem: the sample should clearly show both unhealthy and healthy tissue. To keep your sample fresh, put the cut end of the stem in a moist paper towel. Be careful to keep your cut plants in a cool and dark location to prevent wilting.
  • Plant identification: include photos or samples of the vegetative part of the plant (leaves, branches, stems), a portion of the fruiting or flowering structure, and a representative portion of the stem or bark. The more structures, the better chance for correct identification.
  • Insect identification: bring an intact specimen in a small container soon after capture. Store in a cool dark place.

For more information, please contact Bridget Gregg at bridget.gregg@wsu.edu

Half Day Kayak Tour & Picnic with Hood Canal Adventures
11:00 am - 3:00 pm

On this guided half day adventure we paddle along the scenic rocky shoreline of the North Hood Canal in search of the area’s abundant wildlife before stopping at a secluded beach for a picnic lunch, swimming, and beach combing. Seals, eagles, marine invertebrates, small fish and river otters may be spotted along the way and occasionally we encounter larger marine mammals such as Orca, humpback whales and California Sea Lions.

There are many oysters on the beach where we stop and they can be quite sharp. Feel free to shuck oysters on the beach or let us teach you how! We always carry oyster knives and gloves!

Bring a harvesting basket and clippers if you wish to harvest something to bring home! A delicious tea or other wild edible dish will be prepared for you with what we find along the way!

Conducted April through October. Meet at our Store & Office between 10:00 and 10:25 am to sign in. Tour group size will be between 6 and 14 participants. Private tours for your group may also be arranged for groups of 6 or more.

The Dosewallips Estuary Tour is one of the most popular guided kayaking adventures. This 3 hour round-trip paddle takes us to the Dosewallips River Estuary where we will watch the amazing array of year round and seasonal wildlife and explore the lower river channels. Our Biologist or Naturalist Guide will teach you about the wildlife we see and talk about the natural history of the Hood Canal. The Dosewallips Estuary is one of Washington’s largest intact estuaries and is home to up to 100 harbor seals, bald eagles, blue herons, salmon, river otters and much more. If your lucky we’ll spot Brinnon’s herd of Roosevelt Elk grazing on the banks.
