Forest Conservation Practices with Jefferson Land Trust at Valley View Forest

October 26, 2024 by Andrew Schwartz

Forest Conservation Practices with Jefferson Land Trust at Valley View Forest

10:00 am – 2:00 pm
November 2, 2024

Join Jefferson Land Trust's preserve manager and Northwest Natural Resource Group’s lead forester on Nov. 2, 2024, on a free tour of an actively managed lowland coniferous forest. Objectives for the 65-acre Valley View Forest include increasing forest resilience and improving structural and species diversity through commercial thinning, gap cuts, and creating wildlife habitat structures. As we walk through several treatment units, leaders will discuss the successes and challenges of planning and implementing ecological forestry practices and how we select trees for removal in a thinning. Leaders will also discuss an effort to capture bird response to the practices using remote acoustic monitoring devices. Come prepared to walk up to 20 minutes at a time over trails and off-trail over rough terrain (not ADA accessible) through thinning and gap-cut treatment areas.

Bring lunch, snacks, water, comfortable walking shoes, and your ecological forestry questions!

Meeting location: Near Chimacum, WA. The precise location will be sent to attendees ahead of the tour.

Free site visits provided by Northwest Natural Resource Group to assess habitat diversity and forest health, and provide management recommendations, will be available to attendees.
