A Young Man enlists to serve in World War I after his beloved horse is sold to the cavalry. His hopeful journey takes him out of England and to the front lines as the war rages on.
6th Annual Native Plant Workshop

Get prepared for the Jefferson County Conservation District (JCCD) Plant Sale. JCCD staff and partners from North Olympic Salmon Coalition and WSU Cooperative Extension will be at the Chimacum Grange to discuss why natives are so important, selection and care of native plants, and planting technique. Presenters will also highlight species available through the plant sale that encourage mammals and birds, using natives in buffers and rain gardens, and edible and medicinal species. A visit to the HJ Carroll Park native plant garden is planned after the workshop, weather permitting, for those interested. Stormwater Infiltration: Hydrogeologic Controls and Considerations for Facility Design

Pacific Groundwater Group (PGG) will be presenting a professional-level talk oriented towards engineers, planners and natural resource managers at the Tri Area Community Center in Chimacum, on how shallow groundwater affects the performance and design of stormwater infiltration facilities. Elements of the talk particularly relevant to local conditions include: infiltration in till covered areas (i.e. much of Jefferson and Clallam Counties) and application to Low Impact Development (LID). PGG will be sharing experience and knowledge on infiltration of stormwater and other waters, focusing on assessing hydrogeologic influences on the performance of infiltration facilities. They will also discuss infiltration in the context of Ecology’s recently revised stormwater guidance manual (August 2012). Slide show/discussion format. Live on the Edge! Learn About Critical Areas And Buffer Management

Do you live on a shoreline, near a bluff, adjacent to a wetland or creek, or over an aquifer? If so, you probably live on some of the most wild and beautiful land in Jefferson County. Come to a free workshop, at the Tri Area Community Center in Chimacum, called “Living on the Edge – Protection for People, Property, and Habitat” to learn about ways to care for and protect these special places. Topics include how to use your buffer area without harming it or yourself, the role of native plants, tips on removing noxious weeds, how to enhance or restore a buffer, how to encourage birds and wildlife, and what resources are available to homeowners. Homeowner Septic System Monitoring Class

Due to regulations being relaxed in May 2012, the Jefferson County Board of Health can now authorize homeowners to complete most required septic system monitoring inspections. Homeowners who want this authorization need to complete two training courses, which are offered free of charge beginning in February. The two-part course begins with Septics 101, which will be available online and offered in a classroom format. Septics 201, offered online only, covers step-by-step septic system inspection and reporting of results. This Year’s first offering of the classroom version of Septics 101 will be held at the Quilcene Community Center (294952 Highway 101). Later classes will be held: Thursday, Feb. 7, 3-5pm at the Gardiner Community Center; Monday, Feb. 11, 6-8pm at the Tri-Area Community Center in Chimacum; and Monday, Feb. 14, 3-5pm at the Tri-Area Community Center.

Taylor Shellfish Tour

Taylor Shellfish Farms run a state-of-the-art hatchery located here in Quilcene, at 701 Broad Spit Road on the east side of the Bolton Peninsula on Dabob Bay. At the Quilcene facility, clams, mussels, oysters and geoduck are spawned and their larvae are raised to support Washington State’s shellfish industry. The tour will be broken up into two parts: a hatchery tour from 12PM-1PM and a beach tour from 1PM-2PM. You’ll see how these shellfish are cultivated on the beaches of Puget Sound, Hood Canal and Willapa Bay to produce world-class shellfish. Come learn more about Taylor and see how the Quilcene community’s interests align with the shellfish industry’s. Please carpool, if possible, as parking is limited. Olympic National Park Stewardship Plan Scoping Workshop

The National Park Service (U.S. Dept. of the Interior) is preparing a Wilderness Stewardship Plan to help protect and manage the existing designated wilderness lands within the park. They are at the very front-end of this intensive project, seeking public comment specifically from citizens who live in communities all around the park. They will be holding a public meeting at the Quilcene Community Center (294952 Highway 101), to get ideas and comments from the community. Be sure your voice is heard! Shrimp Sport Fishery Opens

This year’s sport fishery for spot shrimp, will run one day longer in Area 12, Hood Canal, due to policy changes recently adopted by the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission. Fishers are limited to 80 spot shrimp per day and a valid 2013-14 fishing license is required to participate. Hood Canal Shrimp District (Marine Area 12) is open for recreational shrimping from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 4, 8, 15, 18 and 22. (Note that the usual second Saturday, May 11, is NOT open due to very low tides at mid-day.) Additional dates and times will be announced if sufficient quota remains after the initial fishing days scheduled above. Fire District #2 Special Meeting

The Commissioners of Quilcene Fire District (Jefferson Co. Fire Dist #2) will hold a Special Meeting at the Quilcene Fire Station (70 Herbert St.), to discuss the need for an increase in the tax levy that supports Fire District operations. Every citizen served by Fire District #2 (this includes Coyle and the Toandas Peninsula) will need to be well-informed on this issue. Quilcene property owners currently pay 74¢ per $1,000 of assessed valuation. The Commissioners are looking at an increase to $1.25 per $1,000. The levy increase would be voted by District citizens this November.

First Lighting of the Quilcene Village Christmas Tree

This Saturday evening, as the sun slides behind Walker Mountain, everyone in Quilcene can participate in the FIRST EVER lighting of the new Village Christmas Tree. It’s at the intersection of Hwy 101 and Rodgers, at the Northwest corner of the “commercial center” building that houses the Post Office, Jefferson HealthCare Clinic, MunnBro’s Hood Canal Properties, Lux Lumina Salon, and Dragonfly Embroidery. There will be carols, cookies and cider.

Presentation of “My Hope America with Billy Graham“

Questions will be ansered, groups will be invited to take over or replace programming impacted by the County’s retreat, and options will be explored for continuing to serve youth and families with positive recreation opportunities throughout the County.
