Jefferson Land Trust Event: Coexisting With Carnivores

The Jefferson Land Trust Natural History Society will be presenting this event at the Cotton Building (607 Water St. in Port Townsend). Lorna and Darrell Smith are longtime wildlife experts dedicated to improving public understanding of black bears, cougars, grizzly bears and gray wolves across Washington State. They will be discussing their work with Western Wildlife Outreach which aims to address public concerns about these animals and create wildlife-safe communities.

Bake Sale & Parent’s Break Event

The Junior group of Champions called the “Mission Possible” youth group will be holding a Samaritan’s Purse fundraiser at the Brinnon School Gym. It will be an opportunity for kids kindergarten through 5th grades to have a few hours of fun and games including snacks. More importantly, it’s a chance for parents or guardians to take a break. They request a $5 registration fee at the door for the “Kids Fun”. If $5 is too much, a donation of your choice is acceptable. Whether you have kids or not, check out the Bake Sale with homemade goodies such as: brownies, cookies, cupcakes, breads and authentic Philippine specialty wraps. Proceeds from this event will be donated to Samaritan’s Purse Philippine Typhoon Relief. Since 1970, Samaritan’s Purse, a relief organization has helped victims of war, poverty, natural disasters, disease, and famine providing spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world.

Ukrainian “Pysanky” Easter Egg Decorating Class

Jefferson County Parks and Recreation District No. 2 Public Meeting

The Board regrets to announce the resignation of Commissioner Jacque Booth, Position Number 2. As such, they are accepting nominations for this position. The nomination period will close at this meeting. At that time, the Board will evaluate and interview all candidates and appoint the one most qualified. Nominees must be registered voters in Voting Precinct No. 204 (the Brinnon area) and must be present at this meeting. Quilcene Conversations Beautification Team Work Party

Join the Quilcene Conversations Beautification Team at the “Triangle Bed” located on Center Road at the Little Quil River, near Frank Beck Road, Brush Plant Road and East Quilcene Road. This small, wedge-shaped piece of land, that used to have garbage on it, was purchased by Paul and Mary Schmidt and donated to the Quilcene Museum. There will be a crew doing the improvements including heavy equipment. The work to be done includes: placing massive boulders (for sitting and for beauty), weeding, mulch spreading and raking. If you can come down and help, the Quilcene Museum, as well as the Quilcene Conversations Beautification team, would really appreciate it!

Dig For Your Dinner: Learn About Clam and Beach Stewardship

Join biologists Camille Speck and Doug Rogers, at Oak Bay County Park in Port Hadlock, to learn how to safely and sustainably dig clams on local beaches. You’ll also learn about the different types of clams, where to find them, and the basic rules and regulations. Co-sponsored by the WSU Extension, WDFW, and the Jefferson County Marine Resources Committee with support from the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Northwest Straits Initiative. Registration is free, but organizers hope for a $5 donation per family per event. Participants are asked to bring a shellfish license, bucket, boots and digging tools. Free Septic System Class

Learn all about your Septic System and how to inspect it yourself at the Brinnon Community Center (306144 Highway 101). The class combines Septics 101 and 201. Upon completion, if your system is eligible, you can apply for authorization to inspect your septic system. Olympic National Forest Open House: Forest Service Road Use

The Olympic National Forest will be hosting an open house at the Quilcene Middle School multipurpose room (295715 Highway 101), to find out which Forest Service roads and areas are getting the most public use. This information will assist the Forest in creating a financially sustainable road system that meets access needs and minimizes environmental harm. American Competitive Trail Horse Competition

A two day American Competitive Trail Horse Competition will be held at the Home-Port Stables (1014 Duckabush Road) in Brinnon. This is a nationwide competitive event for horses and riders who trail ride. The trail is 6 miles long and will include 8 challenging obstacles. Nicole Black will be donating a significant portion of proceeds to Brinnon Park and Recreation for insurance payments and operating expenses. Competitors can arrive July 3rd and stay the weekend. On Friday evening they will host the proverbial dog and pony show. This will also be a good opportunity for local businesses and vendors. Quilcene Fire Rescue ‘Levy Lid Lift’ Discussion

A “levy lid lift” resolution was submitted for a ballot initiative in the November election. If this initiative does not pass, the fire department will have to cancel its resident firefighter/EMT program. Response times to emergencies will then depend on the availability of volunteer firefighters/EMTs and the distances they must travel. Eventually, home insurance rates could be expected to rise, especially those living within 5 miles of a currently manned fire station. An open public discussion that will form the basis of a citizens’ group charged to see that this “levy lid lift” initiative passes will take place at the Quilcene Community Center (294952 Highway 101). A strategy will be prepared, necessary tasks will be identified, and a budget will be approved. The Cylwik Sisters have been singing and playing music together all their lives. Both their grandmothers played piano and their dad had each take lessons from Grandma. Now they play, sing and have added instruments to their skill set including: the harp, ukulele, guitar, and the fiddle. Concerts in the Woods-“Dave McGraw & Mandy Fer”

McGraw spent a decade as a wildlife biologist, working everywhere from Mexico to the Grand Canyon. Fer logged some time in Spain, where she studied music and local culture. Together, the two songwriters have built a music career on those travels, funneling everything – the characters they met, the things they saw, the sounds they heard, the stories they learned – into a mix of rich, detailed folk music and rootsy Americana. Harvest Winery Tour & Scarecrow Contest

Sip and savor the flavors of fall, enjoy seasonal activities and marvel at nature’s vibrant palate during the Olympic Peninsula Wineries’ Harvest Wine Tour! The eight artisan wineries are located in Chimacum, Nordland, Port Townsend, Sequim and Port Angeles. Taste some fantastic new wines, take a photo with your favorite “wine scarecrows,” enjoy an evening of jazz music and more! Tickets are available online for $25 plus service fees (until 11/7/14 at noon). Any remaining tickets will be sold for $30 at participating wineries during the Harvest Tour. Tickets are not required to attend this event. A $5.00 wine tasting fee will be charged at each winery for non-ticketed visitors. You must be 21 or over to purchase tickets and/or participate in wine tasting.
